Admirals Bounce Back With 3-1 Victory Over The Binghamton Senators

From the Norfolk Admirals:

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Frederik Andersen made 39 saves to lead the Norfolk Admirals (10-12-0-0) to a 3-1 victory over the Binghamton Senators (13-5-1-1) on Saturday night from the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Admirals, who have won three of their last four games, snapped Binghamton’s franchise-record nine-game winning streak.

Kyle Palmieri, Jordan Hendry and Brandon McMillan scored for the Admirals. Andersen (7-6-0) stopped all 29 shots he faced in the final two periods. Norfolk killed all three Senator power plays, increasing their streak of opponent power plays killed to 33 over the last five-plus games.

The Admirals will return to Scope on Friday and Saturday nights to battle the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead 7:32 into the first period. Sami Vatanen sent a shot from right circle that was blocked away into the left circle. Palmieri found it there and sent the rebound past Binghamton backstop Robin Lehner for his ninth goal of season.

The Senators tied the game at 1-1 just under seven minutes later with their AHL-leading eighth shorthanded goal of the season. Derek Grant picked off a Norfolk pass in the left corner, skated towards the goalmouth and sent a backhand shot past Andersen at 14:30.

The Admirals re-claimed the lead 6:35 into the second period. Peter Holland won a faceoff back to Hendry in high slot. Hendry sent a shot through traffic that was deflected on its way through Lehner’s legs for Hendry’s second goal of the season and a 2-1 Norfolk lead.

Norfolk’s lead doubled late in the second period. McMillan attempted a wraparound shot from behind the net near Lehner’s right side. The puck hit Lehner’s pad, bounced towards the low slot, pinballed off the skate of Troy Bodie and went right back to McMillan, who one-timed it past Lehner’s right skate at 17:48 for his third goal of the season.

Andersen turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the third period and nearly scored an empty-net goal when his shot hit the outside of the left post of the Binghamton net. Nevertheless, the Admirals held on for the 3-1 lead.

Lehner (8-3-1) stopped 32 of 35 shots in the setback.

Norfolk was 0-for-5 on the power play. Binghamton was 0-for-3.

Admirals Fall 4-2 To Binghamton

Photo: Casey Staff

The Admirals took on the Binghamton Senators in the second game of their 4 game road trip. This game also kicked off the first of three games in three nights. After watching tonight’s lackluster performance it is evident that this team really needs to look at each other and commit to playing better, There are some players that would most likely be up with the Duck if the NHL season was not locked out. Devante Smith-Pelly has enjoyed some success, but where are the others? Igor Bobkov has shown that he is not the go-to guy right now, Anderson is clearly the better goalie. Yawney needs to crack the whip and get things going.

Enough of the arm-chair coaching and on to the game…..

From the Norfolk Admirals:

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Norfolk Admirals (6-4-0-0) surrendered the first four goals of the game as they fell to the Binghamton Senators (5-4-1-1), 4-2, on Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Admirals continue a four-game road trip tomorrow evening against the Springfield Falcons.

Patrick Maroon and Brandon McMillan netted goals for the Admirals. Igor Bobkov (3-2-0) took the loss after starting the game and allowing three goals on 15 shots in the first period. Frederik Andersen (3-2-0) stopped 11 of 12 shots in the final two periods and did not record a decision. Norfolk out-shot Binghamton, 33-27, in the contest – including 24-12 in the final two periods.

The Senators jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period. Corey Cowick opened scoring 3:11 into the contest. He sent a shot from the slot that was blocked. However, the puck came back to him in the left circle, and he sent a shot through Bobkov’s legs and into the net for a 1-0 Binghamton lead.

Andre Petersson scored a power play goal to double the home team’s lead at 7:26. Jakob Silfverberg sent a shot from the left circle that Bobkov stopped. However, the puck ended up on Petersson’s stick, and he sent a backhand over Bobkov’s right leg for a 2-0 Binghamton lead.

The Senators went ahead, 3-0, late in the first period. Silfverberg picked off a pass in his own zone and began a breakout into the Norfolk zone. He fed a pass from the top of the left circle to Cowick at the top of the right circle, and Cowick quickly sent the puck towards the goal. Andre Benoit redirected the puck past Bobkov at 18:22.

Andersen took over netminding duties to start the second period. However, Binghamton extended its lead to 4-0 just 3:15 into the second stanza when Derek Grant scored on a shorthanded breakaway.

The Admirals got on the board less than two minutes later on Maroon’s fifth goal of the season. While on the power play, Gabe Guentzel sent a shot that Maroon deflected past Senators goaltender Robin Lehner at 4:53. Guentzel’s assist was his first professional point.

Norfolk then drew to within two goals of Binghamton midway through the third period. Hampus Lindholm sent a pass from the left half wall to McMillan in the left circle. McMillan scored his first goal of the season a 10:05 to cut the visitors’ deficit to 4-2.

Despite out-shooting the Senators, 24-12, in the final two periods, the Admirals were unable to completely erase the early four-goal deficit.

Lehner stopped 31 of 33 shots for the win.

Norfolk was 1-for-7 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-for-5.

The third game of Norfolk’s four-game road trip begins tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. against the Northeast Division-leading Springfield Falcons. All games can be heard on 102.1-FM, 1490-AM or 1021TheGame.com. You may also watch on a pay-per-view or season pass basis at AHLLive.com.

Admirals Bounce Back With A 4-2 Victory Over The Senators.

Photo: John Wright

NORFOLK – Hampus Lindholm, Peter Holland and Kyle Palmieri provided the offense and Frederik Andersen’s 40 saves provided the defense as the Norfolk Admirals (6-2-0-0) beat the Binghamton Senators (4-4-1-0), 4-2, tonight at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Admirals came out firing all the guns as they tied a franchise record for shots with a 26-shot first period, and out-shooting the Senators, 26-8, Hampus Lindholm got things rolling as he picked off a pass at the and skated towards in from the left point towards the goal. He beat Senators goalie Ben Bishop with a wrist shot to the glove side at 9:43 of the first period. Peter Holland would double the lead off of a Kyle Palmieri shot that took a weird bounce off of the glass at 16:52. The puck bounced off of the glass behind the net and landed in front of Holland who shot the puck past Bishop for a 2-0 lead.

The Senators got on to the scoreboard with a Andre Benoit goal at the 3:10 mark of the second period to cut the Norfolk lead to one goal. Peter Holland and Luca Caputi worked together to restore the 2 goal lead at 6:25 of the second period. Caputi was behind the Senators net and fed a nice pass to Holland at the top of the Binghamton crease. Holland would one time the pass into the back of the net to give the Ad’s a 3-1 lead going into the locker room.

Kyle Palmieri got into the scoring at 6:07 of the third with the help of Holland. Holland broke up a Senators breakout attempt when he intercepted the puck. He intercepted the puck at the right point and passed to Palmieri in the left faceoff circle. Palmieri one-timed the pass past Bishop’s glove for Norfolk’s 4th and final goal of the night. The Senators would add a Patrick Wiercioch goal at 8:26 of the third period, but that was as close as they would get.

Ben Bishop (40 saves, 44 shots) took the loss and Frederick Andersen (40 Saves,42 shots) took the win. Andersen played a great game and might come out as the go to goaltender in the Admirals rotation. Igor Bobkov could learn a few things from Andersen if he intends to hold the starting position.

This is a rare day game for the Admirals as the puck drops at 11:00 a.m. They will then have 3 games in 3 nights with Binghamton, Springfield, and Albany starting on Saturday. The Admirals return to Scope to host the Springfield Falcons on Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17.
