24 In A Row!!! Norfolk Rolls On With A 3-1 Victory Over The Senators.

NORFOLK, Va. – Tyler Johnson broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period as the Norfolk Admirals (51-18-1-2) defeated the Binghamton Senators (28-39-4-2), 3-1, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. With the win – Norfolk’s 24th straight – the Admirals clinched the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the AHL’s regular season points champion, ensuring home ice throughout the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs, while setting a new franchise record with their 51st win.

The same two teams square off tomorrow night at Scope in Fan Appreciation Night.

Mark Barberio and Trevor Smith joined Johnson on the scoresheet. Goaltender Jaroslav Janus (21-8-2) earned his 13th straight win by turning aside 27 of 28 shots.

Barberio opened the scoring with a blast from the high slot midway through the first period. After Johnson won a faceoff in the left circle, he found Evan Oberg at the left point. Oberg immediately passed to Barberio, who notched his 13th goal of the year by one-timing the puck past Senators goalie Robin Lehner at 18:15.

Both teams went scoreless for the majority of the second period. However, at 16:34 Binghamton broke through and tied the game at 1-1. Jack Downing took a pass from Tim Conboy and sent a slap shot past Janus. Downing streaked into the Norfolk zone along the right wing and took the shot just past the blue line, which hit off the skate of an Admirals defender before it found the net.

Unlike the first two periods, it didn’t take long for a goal in the third period, as Johnson netted the eventual game-winning tally just 2:51 into the final frame. After a keep-in by Scott Jackson at the left point, Radko Gudas sent a shot from the right point. The puck hit the shaft of Johnson’s stick in the right faceoff circle and popped up and over an unsuspecting Lehner on its way into the goal. The score was Johnson’s 30th of the season.

The scoring wouldn’t end there, as Smith made it 3-1 at 16:46. Jean-Philippe Cote was behind the Binghamton net and left the puck to Brandon Segal, who picked it up and passed to Smith near the right post. Smith one-timed it past into the top-left corner of the net for his 23rd goal of the season.

Janus turned aside all 11 third period shots he faced to preserve the 3-1 victory.

Lehner (12-22-1) stopped 32 of 35 shots for the loss.

Norfolk was 0-for-2 on the power play while stopping all five Binghamton man advantage opportunities.

Admirals Make It 7 In A Row, Beat Binghamton 3-2

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Pierre-Cedric Labrie’s goal with 30 seconds remaining in regulation capped off an Admirals comeback, as the Norfolk Admirals (34-18-1-2) defeated the Binghamton Senators (21-30-2-1), 3-2, on Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The victory, Norfolk’s seventh straight, moves the Admirals back into first-place in the East Division.

The Admirals have won seven straight games for the first time since 2006. Norfolk is one win away from equaling the franchise record of eight consecutive victories, which was set during the 2001-02 season.

Brandon Segal notched his first goal in an Admirals uniform since 2008 while Evan Oberg scored his fifth goal of the season in the third period as the Admirals came-from-behind for the eighth time this season. Dustin Tokarski turned aside 33 shots in the victory.

The Senators jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening period of play.

Mike Hoffman opened the scoring less than two minutes after the opening faceoff. Hoffman sent a shot from atop the right faceoff circle over the blocker of Tokarski to give the Senators the 1-0 lead at 1:34 of the first period.

Just over five minutes later, the Senators took advantage of a two-man advantage. Former Admiral, Rob Klinkhammer, knocked down a shot by Andre Petersson and from in front in front of the net, tucked the loose puck under the left pad of Tokarski to give the home team a 2-0 lead at 6:42.

However, that would be all the scoring for the Senators in the contest as Admirals comeback began less than a minute into the second period.

In his first game since returning to Norfolk, Brandon Segal picked up a pass from Alexandre Picard and buried a shot behind Binghamton’s netminder Mike McKenna for his 14th goal of the season to narrow the Admirals deficit to 2-1 just 15 seconds into the middle frame.

Norfolk’s comeback continued with a power play goal by Evan Oberg. After collecting a loose puck, Oberg skated past a pair of Senators defensemen and broke in all alone on McKenna From in between the faceoff circles, Oberg sent a shot top-shelf over the glove of McKenna for his fifth goal of the season to knot the game at 2-2 with 6:27 having expired in the third period.

In the final minute of regulation, Labrie’s 13th goal of the season capped off the comeback. After a shot by Tyler Johnson was kicked aside by McKenna, the puck deflected into the left faceoff circle. From there, Labrie picked up the loose rebound and slipped the shot through the pads of the goaltender to give the Admirals the 3-2 lead at 19:30 of the third.

Dustin Tokarski (24-11-0) stopped 33 of 35 shots for the victory. Mike McKenna (13-16-0) allowed three goals on 39 shots in the defeat.

Norfolk was 1 for 3 on the power play. Binghamton was 1 for 4 with the man advantage.

Game Day – Admirals Vs. Senators

By Ken Peacock

Hockey Night in Binghamton as the Norfolk Admirals (14-9-0-1) visit the Binghamton Senators (9-14-1-1). Norfolk brings a 1-1 record against the Senators this season. The Admirals will play tonight and Saturday night in Binghamton before heading south for a Sunday game against the Bears.

Binghamton is hurting at the moment with the loss of players due to illness, injury, and call-ups. The Sens are 25 games into the season and have already lost 59 man games to illness and injury. This weekend they will be without the services of Derek Grant and Josh Godfrey who were injured in a Wednesday night loss to the WB/S Penguins. The Senators are led in scoring by former Admiral Mark Parrish. Parrish (8G 6A -4) is questionable for this weekends games, but might be forced into an early return. Rookie, Andre Petersson (7G 6A +2) is next in scoring. The Sens defense is led by Patrick Wiercioch (2G 10A -8). Binghamton’s goalies, Robin Lehner (6-9-12.79GAA) and Mike McKenna (3-6-0 2.91GAA) have allowed 72 goals between them while the offense has only contributed 58. The offense and defense are going to have to step up if they want to move out of the cellar of the East Division.

The Admirals currently sit in third place in the East Division behind the WB/S Penguins and the Hershey Bears. Evan Oberg was returned to the Admirals this morning after a brief stay with the Lightning in the press-box. Blair Jones has been recalled to the Lightning. Palat, Petiot, and Picard all made the trip up north this weekend and could possibly play. Norfolk is led by  Cory Conacher (12G 13A +1) and Trevor Smith (10G 15A +13). Mark Barberio (3G 15A +11) is having a great year and continues to lead the Admirals defense. Dustin Tokarski (9-5-0 2.35GAA) has been hot as of late, with a 4 game winning streak. Jaroslav Janus (5-4-1 3.27GAA) shares the goal-tending duties with Tokarski.

Both teams will meet for another game tomorrow in Binghamton. Sunday the Admirals will find themselves in Hershey for a match with the Bears. Norfolk returns to home action on Friday, December 16 against Hershey. This will also be the annual Toy Toss. Get your tickets today!
