Lightning Make Some Moves

By Ken Peacock

The Lightning are struggling right now. Tampa Bay finds itself sitting in the bottom four of its division and in the bottom seven of the NHL. The injury bug has infected the lineup and Dwayne Roloson is struggling in-goal. There have been rumors of the lightning shopping for a goalie, but it looks like that might not happen until after the conclusion of the season. If the Lightning want a good goalie now they would have to put some prospects on the trading block. It doesn’t appear that Steve Yzerman is prepared to do that right now. Tampa Bay did make a few roster changes Friday. Could more changes be coming?

The Lightning’s battered defense has been bolstered up with the acquisition of 24-year-old defenseman Brendan Mikkelson from the Calgary Flames. Mikkelson, a former second-round draft pick by Anaheim in 2005, has played this season for the Abbottsford Heat in the AHL. In 33 games with the Heat, Mikkelson had three goals, 15 points and was plus-one. He is not considered an offensive defenseman, but gives the Lightning depleted defense corps some added depth.

“We felt we needed to get bigger on the blue line and I think he gives us a little more depth and he’s a real good skater,” Yzerman said. “I would say that skating might be his best strength.

“He can skate the puck up the ice, and I wouldn’t describe him strictly as an offensive-minded defenseman or a defensive-minded defenseman. I just think his game is as a guy who can skate the puck up. He makes a good first pass so he has the ability to move it.”

Calgary did not give him up for free. In order to get Mikkelson the Lightning had to give up a body as well. Tampa Bay traded 25-year-old center Blair Jones to complete the deal. Jones opened up the season with the Lightning before being returned to Norfolk of the AHL. He was recalled back to Tampa Bay shortly after the Injury to Martin St.Louis. Jones has had a career high two goals and four points in 22 games with the Lightning this year. Developing in the AHL, Jones was a fan favorite in Norfolk. While in Norfolk he appeared in 279 games scoring 69 goals, 116 assists for 185 points. While he will be missed in Norfolk the change of scenery may be good for Blair.

Tampa Bay made a few other moves on Friday. Brett Connolly rejoined the team after spending the past month on loan to Team Canada for the World Junior Championships. Defenseman Evan Oberg was returned to the Norfolk Admirals. Oberg has been accumulating the frequent flyer miles between Norfolk and Tampa Bay, but still has not been given his shot on NHL ice. With the loss of Jones, the Lightning recalled forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie from the Admirals.

Labrie, 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, has appeared in 29 games for the Admirals this season, recording six goals and 19 points with a plus-17 rating and 63 penalty minutes. Labrie is sixth in points, ranks third in plus/minus and ranks third in penalty minutes with the Admirals in 2011-12. He is also fourth in the AHL in plus/minus.

Labrie was originally signed to a Professional Tryout Contract with the Admirals in October of 2010 and signed a two-year AHL Standard Player’s Contract in December of  2010. He has played in 93 games with the Admirals over the past two seasons, and  has recorded 13 goals and 45 points with 211 penalty minutes. The Lightning signed him to a two-year, two-way contract on December 29, 2011.

Norfolk Admirals Press Release.

TAMPA BAY, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled forward Blair Jones from the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League today, Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced.

Jones has appeared in 66 career NHL games, notching two goals and seven points. He was assigned to the Admirals on November 25.

A native of Central Butte, Saskatchewan, Jones has played in five games with Norfolk this season, notching two goals and four points with 16 penalty minutes. Game Day: Admirals Vs. WB/S Penguins

By Ken Peacock

The Admirals take to the ice in a rare Tuesday night game against the East Division leading WB/S Penguins. Norfolk (12-8-0-1) trails the Penguins (11-5-1-4) for the division lead by 2 points.

Bryan Lerg (9G 9A +9), and Colin McDonald (5G 13A +8) lead the Penguins in scoring. Simon Despres (3G 4A +3) and Carl Sneep (0G 7A +7) lead the defense. Brad Thiessen(9W 5L 2SOL 2.45GAA) has had pulled the majority of minutes in Net for the Penguins. The Pens have have been struggling as of late and are 4-3-0-3 in their last ten games.

The Admirals Cory Conacher (10G 13A +1), and Trevor Smith (9G 13A +12) lead the offense.  Mark Barberio (3G 13A +10) continues to anchor the defense. Dustin Tokarski (7W 5L 2.49GAA) and Jaroslav Janus (5W 3L 1SOL 3.18GAA) continue to share the goal tending duties for the Admirals. Admirals to watch are Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Blair Jones. Labrie has turned up the heat on his offensive skills, while Jones has been logging a lot of ice time since his return from Tampa Bay.

Anytime Norfolk plays the Penguins it is like a playoff game. Tonight’s games is a must win for the Admirals. WB/S and Brad Thiessen have been in a slump as of late, but are still a dangerous team to contend with.

The Admirals home stand continues Friday and Saturday night when Adirondack comes to town. The Phantoms (11-7-0-1) are currently third in the Northeast Division. There are plenty of tickets available for all three games. Get your’s now!

Blair Jones Returns, Admirals Roll Over Providence 5-1

By Ken Peacock

Blair Jones has immediate impact on the Admirals offense, scores his first goal and logs plenty of ice time. Pierre-Cedric Labrie had a goal and an assist and Charles Landry slugged it out and took care of business. The Norfolk Admirals (11-8-0-1) defeat the Providence Bruins (8-12-1-1), 5-1, on Friday night at Scope. Both teams meet again tonight at Scope at 7:15 p.m.

The Admirals opened scoring 7:34 into the first period with a goal from Blair Jones. Cory Conacher sent a pass from the right circle to Matt Fornataro in the slot. Fornataro’s shot hit the leg of Providence goalie Michael Hutchinson and rebounded to the left circle and Blair Jones. Jones shot the puck past Hutchinson’s right leg his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Norfolk lead.

Less than four minutes later Providence evened the score one a power play goal from Jamie Tardif. The Bruins David Warsofsky sent a pass Carter Camper at the bottom of the right circle and sent it in towards the goal Tardif shot it past Tokarski. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.

Ondrej Palat would give the Admirals a 2-1 lead almost ten minutes into the second period. Palat entered the offensive zone and passed Pierre-Cedric Labrie. Labrie moved into the left corner and passed back to Palat on the other side of the Bruin goal. Palat knocked the puck past Hutchinson for his first goal of the season. Norfolk  would take a 3-1 lead from Pierre-Cedric Labrie late in the second period. Labrie stripped the puck from a Bruin defender shot the puck between the legs of a defender and off the leg pads of the Bruin goalie.
