New Admirals Lose To The Old Admirals…Or Crunch 4 Admirals 2

Gary Walts, The Post-Standard

Last night was the first meeting of the our current Admirals taking on our old Admirals. The new look Syracuse Crunch are held together by players that wore an Admirals jersey last season. It’s was a bittersweet meeting for the fans. While we enjoy the current version of the Admirals it is hard to let go of the team that skated here last season. Syracuse basically got a championship team gift wrapped and put under the tree this season. A team that many feel should be in Norfolk. Well it is what it is and there is nothing that we, the fans, could do anything about. We move on and embrace the Ducks prospects and skate ahead in search of another Calder Cup. While the outcome of the game was not what we wanted, it was a close game with some fireworks at the end that will make next weeks games a little bit more interesting. Here is the recap from the Norfolk Admirals.

Admirals Fall to Syracuse, 4-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Kyle Palmieri and Sami Vatanen netted goals, but the Norfolk Admirals (13-14-1-0) fell to the Syracuse Crunch (19-7-1-3), 4-2, on Friday night from the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter. The game was the first of eight meetings between the clubs in 2012-13.

Norfolk suffered just its third regulation loss in December, falling to 6-3-1-0 in the month. Admirals goaltender Igor Bobkov (6-8-0) stopped 28 of 32 shots. Syracuse netted three power play goals in the contest.

Norfolk plays the second game of its three-game road trip tomorrow night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Syracuse took a 2-0 lead after one period on a pair of power play one-timers. Mark Barberio scored on a shot from the right point at 9:42. Alex Killorn then scored on a shot from the slot at 12:12.

Norfolk cut its deficit to one goal 7:19 into the second stanza. Palmieri picked off a pass in the neutral zone and skated in alone on Crunch goaltender Dustin Tokarski. He sent a backhand shot over Tokarski’s right leg for his tenth goal of the season, cutting Syracuse’s lead to 2-1.

Syracuse restored its two-goal lead exactly five minutes into the final frame as Ondrej Palat scored on a rebound to give the home team a 3-1 lead.

Vatanen’s fourth goal of the season came at 10:54 of the third period. Patrick Maroon sent a pass through two sets of legs to the rookie defenseman, who scored to cut the Crunch lead to 3-2.

However, Brett Connolly netted the third Syracuse power play goal of the contest at 16:15 for the 4-2 final score.

Tokarski (12-5-3) stopped 16 of 18 shots in the win.

Norfolk was 0-for-2 on the power play. Syracuse was 3-for-4.

The Admirals and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins face off at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania. Tune in to 102.1-FM, 1490-AM, 1021TheGame.com or AHLLive.com.

Andersen improved his record to 6-5-0 with his second consecutive win. He finished the weekend with 61 saves on 63 shots.

Norfolk’s penalty kill was perfect for the second consecutive game, stopping all six of Bridgeport’s chances while killing all 15 opponent power plays over the weekend.

6 Is A Fluke, 7 Is A Streak – Admirals Lose To Hershey 5-2

Something is wrong in Norfolk. No Offense, No Defense, sketchy goaltending. No heart, lazy skating, embarrassing. These were some of the phrases I heard tonight at Scope. Yes, something is wrong. If the Admirals won anything tonight it was bragging rights to the 1st Annual Battle of the Bottom. The Admirals are now sitting on the bottom and looking up. There is some hope. I mean really….There is no where else to go but up.

The Hershey Bears came to town tonight. The Bears, like the Admirals are not having a stellar season. Two teams that are traditionally holding the top positions find themselves sitting at the bottom. Well tonight the Bears took home a 5-2 win to put some distance between themselves and the Admirals. The Admirals looked terrible in front of the home crowd and Anahiem Head Coach, Bruce Boudreau. Not a good outing at all. Hopefully Bruce can give them a pep talk and they can get themselves together before coming back home in December.

Game Summary from the Admirals:

NORFOLK – John Mitchell brought the Admirals within a goal of tying the Bears in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as Norfolk (7-11-0-0) fell to Hershey (8-10-1-0), 5-2, on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The same teams meet on Saturday night at Giant Center in Hershey as the Admirals begin a brief two-game road trip.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead 19:05 into the first period. Mathieu Beaudoin sent a pass from the right circle to T.J. Syner in the low slot. Syner redirected the pass beyond the outstretched stick of Norfolk netminder Igor Bobkov and into the net.

Norfolk tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period on Palmieri’s seventh goal of the season. Peter Holland stole the puck from a Hershey defender behind the net and centered it into the slot. Palmieri one-timed it past Bears backstop Braden Holtby at 7:39.

The Bears re-claimed the lead less than five minutes later. Evan Barlow attempted a wraparound shot that deflected off a Norfolk defender and off Bobkov’s left leg pad. Jon DiSalvatore swept the puck off Bobkov’s pad and sent it over the goaltender’s leg near the post at 12:37.

Hershey’s lead doubled just 51 seconds later. Dmitry Orlov attempted a shot from the left half wall that went wide behind the net. The puck ended up on the stick of Patrick McNeill, who sent a shot from the high slot through a maze of traffic and past Bobkov at 13:28 for a 3-1 lead for the visitors.

Norfolk closed its gap to one goal 6:48 into the third period. Gabe Guentzel sent a shot from the left point through traffic. The puck deflected first off the stick of teammate John Mitchell and then off a Bears defender before eluding Holtby. The goal was Mitchell’s fourth of the season and made the score 3-2 in favor of Hershey.

The Admirals continued to press for the equalizer, out-shooting the Bears in the third period, 12-9, and earning two power plays. Palmieri hit the crossbar with a shot that would have tied the game, as well. However, Garrett Marshall one-timed a pass from Boyd Kane into the net at 16:23, and DiSalvatore iced the win with an empty-net goal at 19:38, as the Bears escaped Norfolk with a 5-2 decision.

Bobkov (3-6-0) stopped 30 of 34 shots in the setback. Holtby made 24 saves on 26 shots for the win.

Norfolk was 0-for-3 on the power play. Hershey was 0-for-2.

The Admirals and Bears face off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night from Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Tune in at 7:00 p.m. to 102.1-FM, 1490-AM, 1021TheGame.com or AHLLive.com. The Admirals return to Scope on Friday and Saturday, December 14 and 15, against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Poor Play, Frustration, Sketchy Officiating….A Recipe For Disaster. Admirals Fall 5-2.

Norfolk had its annual Grand Illumination Parade to kick off the holiday season. There was only one problem, they forgot to flip the switch in the Admirals locker room. The only thing in Scope that was being lit up last night was the back of Igor Bobkov’s neck. The Springfield Falcons (10-2-0-2)  schooled the Norfolk Admirals (7-7-0-0) on how to play hockey to the tune of a 5-2 victory. The Admirals have until Wednesday night to get their act together when the Charlotte Checkers come to town.

Photo: John Wright

Springfield took an early 1-0 lead at 4:51 of the opening period. Dalton Smith moved in from the left circle and across the slot before sending a backhand shot behind Admirals netminder, Igor Bobkov. Norfolk would tie the game up 47 seconds later with a Chris Wagner rebound goal off of a Mat Clark shot. Both teams would go back and forth until Springfield scored with 21 seconds left in the first. John Moore found the back of the net when his shot deflected off the stick of an Admiral and past Bobkov. The Falcons closed out the period with the 2-1 lead.

Photo: John Wright

Springfield opened up the second period with a Tim Erixon goal at 5:29 for the 3-1 lead to extend the Falcon lead to 3-1. Kyle Palmieri found Peter Holland out in the open and fed him a pass. Holland had the jump on the Falcon defenders and went in with a breakaway and scored with a wrist shot at 8:49. Both team would head off to their respected locker rooms with the Falcons holding the 3-1 advantage.

The third period was a defensive battle and the Admirals continued to out shoot the Falcons, but that was not enough. Nick Holden extended the Falcon lead to 4-2 at 14:08. David Savard would score an empty-net, shorthanded goal at 16:59 to close out the scoring at 5-2.

Springfield to this season had only managed to beat the Admirals 3 times at Scope since the Admirals joined the AHL. The Falcons have now won 2 games in two days. Norfolk was did not score on any of their power play opportunities. Poor passing, questionable goal-tending and overall poor play is a recipe for disaster that is leaving a bad taste in the mouths at Scope. It didn’t help that it seemed that the referee, Ryan Murphy, had his head stuck somewhere. I would say that the officiating was for lack of better words….”Sketchy” (and that is being nice). It would appear that four of the Admirals thought that as well, but Murphy was having not wanting his actions questioned and they were sent immediately to the time out corner with penalties for abuse of officials of unsportsmanlike conduct. Trent Yawney waited until the end of the game for his discussion with Murphy. Needless to say the Admirals performance of late has been extremely frustrating.

The Admirals and Charlotte Checkers will meet for the first game of the GEICO Challenge Cup this Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m. at Scope. There are plenty of tickets available. Get yours today.

Admirals Close Out Road Trip With 5-4 Shootout Win In Albany

The Admirals closed out their 4 game road trip with a 5-4 win over Albany yesterday afternoon. It took some extra time and a shoot out to do it, but a win and the 2 points goes into the books. The Admirals have returned home and are preparing for a Friday and Saturday night match up against the Springfield Falcons.

From the Norfolk Admirals:

ALBANY, N.Y. – Patrick Maroon scored in the bottom of the fifth round of the shootout as the Norfolk Admirals (7-5-0-0) closed out their four-game road trip with a 5-4 victory over the Albany Devils (3-5-0-3) on Monday afternoon at the Times Union Center. The Admirals, who finished the road trip 1-3-0-0, return to Scope to square off against the Springfield Falcons on Friday and Saturday nights.

Kyle Palmieri scored twice, Luca Caputi and Peter Holland each recorded a goal and an assist, and Sami Vatanen had two helpers for the Admirals. Frederik Andersen (4-2-0) stopped 39 of 43 shots through regulation and overtime and stopped four of five shooters in the shootout to earn the victory in net.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead 13:27 into the first period. Caputi tried to send a pass from the left circle to a teammate in the right circle. However, the pass deflected off the stick of an Albany defender in the low slot. The puck then trickled into the net between the legs of goaltender Jeff Frazee for Caputi’s first goal as an Admiral.

The Devils tied the game at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Steve Zalewski cut through the right circle and threw the puck towards the goalmouth. The puck deflected off the stick of Albany forward Chad Wiseman and into the net at 15:25.

Albany took a 2-1 lead 8:24 into the second period with a two-on-one break. Zalewski sent a pass from the left circle to Tim Sestito in the right circle, and Sestito sent a backhander past Andersen.

Norfolk tied the game at 2-2 just 32 seconds into the third period. Devante Smith-Pelly won a puck battle behind the Albany net and centered a pass into the low slot. Holland one-timed the puck over the glove of Frazee for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Albany’s Jay Leach (hooking) and Jacob Josefson (roughing) were whistled for penalties at the same time, giving the Admirals a five-on-three power play. It took just three seconds for Palmieri to put the Admirals ahead, 3-2. Holland won the faceoff and Maroon tipped the puck back to Palmieri at the right point. Palmieri one-timed it past Frazee at 2:12.

Norfolk’s lead doubled 59 seconds later on Palmieri’s second power play goal of the period. Caputi sent a feed from the left corner to Palmieri in the left circle, and Palmieri sent a shot over Frazee’s left shoulder for a 4-2 lead at 3:11. With the goal, Palmieri tied Holland for the team lead in goals with his sixth of the season.

Albany closed to within one of the Admirals with a shorthanded goal less than ten minutes later. Matt Anderson found a loose puck in a goalmouth scramble and shoveled it into the net at 12:43.

The Devils tied the game at 4-4 with 3:27 remaining in regulation. Adam Larsson sent a slap shot from the right point that eluded the blocker of Andersen.

Norfolk had two chances to win the game after an Adam Henrique goaltender interference penalty 3:57 into overtime. However, Vatanen hit the crossbar and Maroon was stopped by Frazee in the waning moments of overtime, sending the game to a shootout.

After two scoreless rounds, both Albany’s Joe Whitney and Holland scored in the third round of the shootout. Neither team scored in the fourth round, and Andersen stopped Devils defenseman Larsson in the top of the fifth round. In the bottom of the fifth round, Maroon sent a backhand shot between the legs of Frazee and into the net to give Norfolk a 2-1 decision in the shootout and a 5-4 victory in the game.

Frazee made 31 saves on 35 shots through regulation and overtime before allowing two conversions on five attempts for the shootout setback.

Norfolk was 2-for-9 on the power play. Albany was 0-for-3.

Admirals Open Road Trip with Loss in Bridgeport

From the Norfolk Admirals:

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Goals by Kyle Palmieri and Emerson Etem weren’t enough as the Norfolk Admirals (6-3-0-0) opened a four-game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (6-3-0-0) on Wednesday morning from Webster Bank Arena. The Admirals will continue the road trip on Saturday night against the Binghamton Senators.

Norfolk netminder Frederik Andersen (3-2-0) took the loss with 22 saves. The Admirals out-shot the Sound Tigers, 30-26.

Bridgeport opened scoring 3:40 into the contest. Colin McDonald sent a wrist shot from the right half-wall that eluded Andersen for a 1-0 Sound Tigers lead.
