Admirals Win 6-1, Sweep The Marlies, Win The Calder Cup

By Ronnie Shuker, The Canadian Press

TORONTO – Tyler Johnson and Mike Kostka each scored twice as the Norfolk Admirals defeated the Toronto Marlies 6-1 on Saturday to capture their first Calder Cup championship.

Richard Panik and Pierre-Cedric Labrie had the other goals for the Admirals, who swept the American Hockey League best-of-seven final.

Norfolk goalie Dustin Tokarski stopped 18 shots for his 12th win of the post-season and Cory Conacher chipped in with four assists. Johnson added two assists to also finish the night with four points.

Mike Zigomanis had the lone goal for Toronto. Ben Scrivens made 27 saves in front of a sell-out crowd of 8,084 at Ricoh Coliseum.

It’s the first championship title for Norfolk in its 12-year franchise history, capping off a remarkable and record-setting season.

In early February, the Admirals sat third in their division and were simply fighting for a playoff spot. But since a loss on Super Bowl Sunday to the Springfield Falcons, the Admirals went 43-3, which included a 28-game winning streak from Feb. 10 until April 20 – a professional hockey league record.

In the playoffs, Norfolk went 15-3, defeating the Manchester Monarchs 3-1, the Connecticut Whale 4-2 and then sweeping the St. John’s IceCaps and the Marlies.

Just as in the first three games of the series, Norfolk scored first in a chippy opening period with 31 minutes in penalties.

Panik, a 2009 second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, drove to the Marlies net and wristed a weak backhand shot toward the net that deflected off Marlies defenceman Juraj Mikus’s skate and in past Scrivens 6:17 into the game.

Toronto tied it with 16.1 seconds left in the period on a long 5-on-3 power play with Panik given a five-minute major and game misconduct for elbowing.

The Marlies worked it around the perimeter until Joe Colborne found Zigomanis, playing just his second game of the series, alone at the side of the net for an easy tap in.

It was the first goal Tokarski had allowed in 88:36 after shutting out the Marlies 1-0 in Game 3 and just the second power-play goal for Toronto, which went just 2-for-26 on the man advantage in the series.

Norfolk retook the lead 4:26 into the second period on a delayed penalty call. Ondrej Palat dished from the behind the goal line to Game 3 overtime hero Kostka who ripped a shot from the point past a screened Scrivens for his fifth of the playoffs.

The Admirals then made it a 3-1 game at 16:45. After Scrivens made a sensational sliding blocker save on Johnson off a one-timer, Johnson picked up the rebound behind the net and banked it off Scrivens’ back and into the net.

The Admirals took a three-goal lead less than a minute into the third on the power play. Kostka, a hometown player from Etobicoke, Ont., blasted a shot from the top of the circle high past Scrivens.

Johnson, an undrafted free agent signing by Tampa Bay in 2011, got his second of the game at 12:35 with Scrivens pulled for an extra attacker. Labrie then made it 6-1 Norfolk, snapping in a rebound past Scrivens into an open net.

Labrie Scores OT Winner, Admirals Lead The Series 3-0

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Pierre-Cedric Labrie scored on a breakaway 1:37 into overtime and Dustin Tokarski stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Norfolk Admirals claimed Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals over the St. John’s IceCaps, 1-0, on Monday night at the Mile One Centre. The Admirals lead the best-of-seven series, three games to none, with Game 4 set for tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. EDT from Mile One Centre.

Tokarski (7-2) earned his first shutout of the playoffs to out-duel St. John’s netminder Eddie Pasquale (7-7), who turned aside 26 of 27 shots. Neither team scored on the power play, as the Admirals went 0-for-7 and the IceCaps were 0-for-6.

The only goal of the game came early in overtime. Labrie took possession of the puck after a neutral zone turnover and broke in alone on Pasquale. The second-year Admiral sent a wrist shot from between the hashmarks in the slot that eluded Pasquale’s glove for his fourth goal of the playoffs.

Admirals Shutout The Whale 4-0, Take 3-2 Series Lead

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Alexandre Picard scored twice and Jaroslav Janus stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Norfolk Admirals shut out the Connecticut Whale, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. With the victory, the Admirals now lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Semifinals series, three-games-to-two.

Ondrej Palat and Pierre-Cedric Labrie also scored for the Admirals in the win. Norfolk out-shot Connecticut, 35-22.

The Admirals opened scoring 15:15 into the game on Picard’s first goal of the series and fifth of the playoffs overall. The veteran forward took a pass from Labrie and went behind the Connecticut net. He then re-emerged in front and to the left of Whale netminder Cameron Talbot before sending a wraparound shot past the goaltender for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.

Picard doubled the lead early in a dominant second period for the visitors. He found the rebound of a Scott Jackson shot in the slot and sent a shot into the net while falling at 2:43. It was the only one of 15 shots by the Admirals to get past Talbot in the second period, as Norfolk out-shot Connecticut, 15-7, in the stanza.

Norfolk went ahead, 3-0, late in the third period. Tyler Johnson chased a dump-in behind the Connecticut net and centered the puck to Palat in the slot. Palat’s wrister beat Talbot, blocker-side, for his third goal of the playoffs at 14:06.

Labrie iced the victory with a goal with 5.2 seconds remaining just after a power play had expired.

Norfolk was 0-for-3 on the power play while Connecticut was 0-for-4.

Cameron Talbot (5-3) made 32 saves on 36 shots for the loss.

Admirals Fall In OT, Drop The First Game Of The Series 3-2

NORFOLK, Va. – Andreas Thuresson scored 2:53 into overtime as the Connecticut Whale defeated the Norfolk Admirals, 3-2, in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semifinals series on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals trail the Whale, one game to none, in the best-of-seven series. Game 2 is set for Friday night at Scope at 7:30 p.m.

Ondrej Palat scored his first professional playoff goal and Pierre-Cedric Labrie tied the game at 2-2 late in the first period. Dustin Tokarski (2-1) stopped 26 of 29 shots in the setback. All the scoring in the game came in the first period until Thuresson’s game-winner.

Norfolk took an early lead with the Palat goal at 5:43 of the first period. After Trevor Smith took a pass from Jean-Philippe Cote in the right corner, he centered to Brandon Segal in the mid-slot. Segal sent a shot that Whale goaltender Cameron Talbot kicked out into the left circle. Without breaking stride towards the goal, Palat fired the puck over Talbot’s glove to put Norfolk up 1-0.

Connecticut responded with two quick goals less than three minutes later. The first came when Tim Erixon found Jonathan Audy-Marchessault outside the crease. Audy-Marchessault beat Tokarski on his second shot over the netminder’s left leg for the tying goal at 8:18.

The second goal for Connecticut came just 12 seconds later and was the result of three quick passes. J.T. Miller passed the puck from the right corner to Casey Wellman at the right half wall. Wellman threw the puck in front of the crease, where Marek Hrivik redirected it through Tokarski’s legs at 8:30.

Labrie tied the game at 2-2 late in the first period. Mark Barberio pinched in from the right point to beat a Connecticut defender to the loose puck in the right corner. He then threw the puck towards the crease, where Labrie sent a shot wide. Killorn angled his right skate on top of the goalmouth to corral the puck and send it back to Labrie at the right edge of the slot. Labrie then sent a shot through traffic and over Talbot’s glove at 16:56 for his second goal of the post-season.

The goal fest would come to a halt in the second period when the teams combined for 21 shots, but no red lights. Midway through the period, Norfolk killed a two-man disadvantage with two of their best penalty killers, Evan Oberg and Cote, in the penalty box. The Norfolk penalty kill stood strong, killing four Connecticut power plays in the second stanza alone.

The stalemate carried over into the third period when Tokarski stopped 12 shots and Talbot denied nine. The game would require overtime.

Just 2:53 into the extra frame, Thuresson sent a slapshot from the upper-left circle. The puck hit Tokarski and deflected up and over his head. With the Norfolk netminder trying to find the rebound, the puck came down behind him and rolled into the goal for the game-winner.

Talbot (4-0) stopped 31 of 33 shots for the win.

Norfolk was 0-for-6 on the power play. Connecticut was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Admirals Take Game 3, Beat Monarchs 5-2

Photo: Mark Bolton - Union Leader

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Brandon Segal had two goals against his former team, Dustin Tokarski made 25 saves in his first game of the series and Norfolk’s penalty kill remained perfect as the Norfolk Admirals defeated the Manchester Monarchs, 5-2, in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Admirals now lead the best-of-five series, two games to one. Norfolk has a chance to close out the series in Game 4 on Friday night in Manchester.

Photo: Mark Bolton - Union Leader

Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Philip-Michael Devos each scored their first career Calder Cup Playoff goals while Alexandre Picard netted his team-leading fourth goal of the playoffs. Norfolk received three assists from Trevor Smith and two helpers each from Alex Killorn and Cory Conacher.

The Admirals denied all six Manchester power play opportunities to improve to 20-for-20 on the penalty kill in the series, while Tokarski (1-0) earned his third career playoff victory in his first game of the series.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the contest. Killorn carried the puck into the attacking zone along the right wing before sending it to Evan Oberg in the right circle. Oberg slipped past a defenseman before shuffling the puck to his left. Segal, who played for Manchester in 2009-10, accepted the pass between the hashmarks and sent a shot past Manchester goaltender Martin Jones for his first goal of the game.

The Admirals’ lead doubled to 2-0 just over seven minutes later. Smith sent a feed from the left corner to Labrie in the left faceoff circle. Labrie sent a shot over the blocker of Jones at 7:40.

Manchester cut Norfolk’s lead to one goal less than four minutes later. Linden Vey spotted Robbie Czarnik in the slot, and Czarnik sent a quick backhand shot through the leg pads of Tokarski at 11:06 to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Admirals after one period.

Norfolk restored its two-goal lead 4:31 into the second period. Mike Kostka sent a shot from the high slot that Jones stopped. However, Devos found the rebound in the low slot and sent a shot through Jones’ legs for a 3-1 lead.

Mark Bolton - Union Leader

Manchester again closed its gap to one goal less than nine minutes later. Vey intercepted a puck at the right point of the Norfolk zone and cut towards the slot. He dropped a pass in the high slot to Stefan Legein, and Legein sent a slap shot over the glove of Tokarski at 12:51 to cut the visitors’ lead to 3-2.

However, the Admirals iced the game in the final half of the third period after Legein was whistled for boarding, giving Norfolk a five-minute, major power play. Picard scored at 14:45 off a rebound opportunity to put Norfolk ahead, 4-2. Segal then sealed the victory at 18:32 with an empty-net goal.

Martin Jones (1-1) stopped 28 of 32 shots for the loss

Norfolk was 1-for-8 on the power play. Manchester was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.

With the win, the Admirals set a franchise record with 15 consecutive wins on home ice and stretched their overall winning streak to 25 games.

The Admirals will conclude the 2011-12 regular season with a three-game road trip beginning next Friday against the Albany Devils.

The Admirals knotted the game at 1-1 in with less than two minutes to go in the second period. After winning a race to the puck, Alexandre Picard slipped a pass to Labrie on the right side of the net. From there, Labrie jammed home a shot behind Binghamton goaltender Mike McKenna at 18:27for his 14th goal of the season.

After an equally-played first 16 minutes of the third period, the Admirals took charge with three goals in the final three minutes to close out the game.

Norfolk took a 2-1 lead on Smith’s 24th goal of the season. Norfolk doubled its lead just 42 seconds later. From the left faceoff circle, Killorn sent a cross-crease pass to Johnson. Before McKenna could recover, Johnson slipped his 31st of the season behind the Senators netminder to give Norfolk the 3-1 lead.

An empty-net goal by Conacher capped off the scoring as the Admirals skated away with the 4-1 victory in front of the third sellout crowd at Scope of the season.
