Admirals Weekend Road Trip Round Up

This week was an Admiral-less week in the Norfolk area. With the Admirals on the road there were only a few ways for us to get our fix. For the die hard fans there was a nice road trip up to the snowy north. For most of us there was either AHL live or listening to Pete on the radio or internet stream. No matter how you may have got your fix you were able to keep up with the team and their successful road trip that saw them collect 5 of 6 possible points this weekend. The Admirals will return to Scope for a weekend series against the Providence Bruins. At Saturday’s game the Admirals will also the latest inductees to the Admirals Hall of Fame. Brian Martin and Marty Wilford will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Bobkov, Penalty Kill Lead Admirals to Victory

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Penn. – Igor Bobkov made 32 saves, the penalty kill was perfect on eight chances and Brayden Irwin’s first goal of the season broke a scoreless tie in the third period as the Norfolk Admirals (21-24-2-1) topped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (25-21-2-1), 1-0, on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Admirals registered a franchise-low 12 shots on goal in the contest, but Bobkov (10-13-0) turned aside all 32 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season.

The Admirals continue a four-game road trip tomorrow against the Connecticut Whale. They return to Norfolk Scope Arena on Feb. 22nd and 23rd against the Providence Bruins.

After both teams registered five shots in a scoreless first period, the Penguins out-shot the Admirals, 13-4, in the second period with help from five power play opportunities in the stanza. However, the game entered the third period with no score.

Irwin, who had been signed to his second Professional Tryout Contract of the season with Norfolk just yesterday, broke the scoreless stalemate 3:17 into the final frame. Sami Vatanen sent a shot from the right point that Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff blocked. However, Irwin found the rebound in traffic in the low slot and slipped a shot under Zatkoff.

That was one of only three third-period shots for Norfolk, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton sent 14 shots towards Bobkov. However, Bobkov came up with several huge saves to stifle the Penguins’ offense and earn the shutout.

Jeff Zatkoff (16-14-0) stopped 11 of 12 shots for the loss.

Norfolk was 0-for-3 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-for-8.

Admirals FAIL – Lose To Baby Pens 4-1

After putting together a nice win last night, the Admirals returned to their old ways and drop a game to the WB/S Pens.Whatever fire they had last night fizzled overnight and into this game. Stupid penalties and the lack of heart killed them. Next up for the Admirals are the Hershey Bears up in Hershey for a 5pm start.

From The Norfolk Admirals:

NORFOLK – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (25-19-2-1) turned the tables on the Norfolk Admirals (19-24-2-1) on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena, earning a 4-1 victory one day after falling by the same score to the Admirals.

A crowd of 7,094 fans saw Peter Holland score his team-leading 15th goal of the season in the setback. Norfolk netminder Igor Bobkov (8-13-0) stopped 29 of 32 shots in the setback.

The Admirals now embark on a four-game road trip commencing tomorrow in Hershey against the Bears. They return to Norfolk Scope Arena on Feb. 22nd and 23rd against the Providence Bruins.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 1-0 lead 13:21 into the first period. Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff started the play with a long outlet pass from his crease as the Admirals were in the process of a line change. Former Admirals forward Trevor Smith accepted the pass near the left point of the blueline and sent a wrist shot that deflected off an Admirals defender and past Bobkov.

The visitors’ lead doubled to 2-0 with a power play goal only 47 seconds into the second stanza. Chad Kolarik spotted Beau Bennett with a pass in the slot. Bennett initially sent a backhand shot that was blocked. However, the puck caromed back to Bennett, who sent a shot past Bobkov’s glove and into the net.

Norfolk countered with a shorthanded goal just under 11 minutes later. Patrick Maroon blocked a shot at the left point of the Norfolk zone and carried the puck up the ice on a two-on-one with Holland. Maroon sent a pass from the right circle to Holland, who sent a shot past the blocker of Zatkoff at 11:38 to cut the home team’s deficit to 2-1.

However, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton sealed the victory midway through the third period. Kolarik sent the puck from behind the net to Riley Holzapfel in the slot, and Holzapfel scored off a quick shot at 10:23.

Warren Peters added an empty-net goal at 18:58 for the 4-1 final score.

Jeff Zatkoff (16-12-0) stopped 25 of 26 shots for the win.

Norfolk was 0-for-5 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1-for-5.

Admirals Close Out Road Trip With Loss In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Emerson Etem’s shorthanded goal was the only tally of the game for the visitors as the Norfolk Admirals (14-15-1-0) closed out a three-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the Springfield Falcons (17-8-2-3) on Sunday evening from MassMutual Center. Norfolk went 1-2-0-0 on the road trip.

Matt Calvert made the score 3-0 less than three minutes later. He attempted a wraparound shot from behind the goal line to Bobkov’s left. The puck caromed back to Calvert off a defender’s skate, and the Falcons forward sent a shot past Bobkov’s glove from the right circle at 16:06.

The Falcons took a 4-0 lead with a power play goal 4:57 into the second period. Cam Atkinson centered the puck from behind the net to former Norfolk captain Ryan Craig at the goalmouth. Craig one-timed the puck into the net past Bobkov’s left leg.

Frederik Andersen took over between the pipes for the Admirals to start the third period, and Norfolk broke up Springfield netminder Allen York’s shutout bid with a shorthanded goal 2:47 into the final frame. Etem sent a pass from the neutral zone to Nate Guenin, who entered the attacking zone along the right wing and sent a shot on York. The rebound came into the slot, and Etem scored his ninth goal of the season to cut Springfield’s lead to 4-1.

Barberio started the play behind his own net with an outlet pass that Richard Panik tipped at the center ice faceoff circle right onto the stick blade of Ouellet. The veteran forward then cut through the left wing before sending a shot over a diving defender and the left shoulder of Penguins goaltender Scott Munroe for his fifteenth goal of the season.

The Penguins tied the game at 1-1 late in the second period. Alex Grant corralled a Norfolk clearing attempt at the left point. He then sent a wrist shot that deflected off the heel of Bryan Lerg’s outstretched stick in the left circle and eluded Tokarski at 14:23.

Barberio’s goal came on Norfolk’s sixth power play of the game 12:23 into the third period. As Tyler Johnson won a faceoff in the left circle, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton center’s stick broke. Johnson tipped the puck back to Barberio, who then isolated on the defender with the broken stick. Barberio faked a shot before sending a high wrist shot through traffic and past Munroe for his twelfth goal of the season and a 2-1 Norfolk lead.

The Admirals defense, led by Tokarski, shut the door on the Penguins the rest of the way despite several scoring chances after the visitors pulled Munroe in favor of the extra attacker.

Munroe (18-9-3) ended the game with 21 saves on 23 shots.

Norfolk was 2-for-7 on the power play while stopping both Wilkes-Barre/Scranton man advantage opportunities.

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa. – With a pair of third-period goals, including a power-play goal by Carter Ashton, the Norfolk Admirals (36-18-1-2) set a new franchise-record with their ninth-consecutive victory, as they defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (32-18-2-5), 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The nine-game winning streak is Norfolk’s longest since the team joined the American Hockey League prior to the 2000-01 season.

With the victory, the Admirals extend their lead in the East Division to four points over the Penguins and eight points over the third-place Hershey Bears. Norfolk also ties the Oklahoma City Barons for the most points in the AHL with 75.

Mark Barberio and Jean-Philippe Cote joined Ashton on the goal sheet, while Dustin Tokarski turned aside 28 shots for his sixth-straight win and his AHL-leading 25th victory of the season.

The Penguins broke a scoreless tie with just over seven minutes remaining in the second period. As his team skated with their fourth power play of the night, Ben Street sent a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle. The shot deflected off the glove of Tokarski and behind the Admirals’ netminder to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 12:27.

The Admirals knotted the game at 1-1 with a power play goal by Mark Barberio. With his team skating on a man advantage, Tyler Johnson slipped a pass to Barberio in the center slot. Before being knocked into the net, Barberio fired a shot over the glove of Penguins netminder Patrick Killeen for his ninth of the season at 17:07.

Norfolk took their first lead of the contest on Jean-Philippe Cote’s first tally since joining the Admirals in mid-November. After Johnson won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Cote, the defenseman fired a shot over the glove of Killeen to give the Admirals a 2-1 lead at 4:44 of the third.

With just over ten minutes remaining, the Penguins’ Alexandre Picard knotted the game at 2-2. The defenseman picked up a loose puck along the right-side boards and fired a shot over Tokarski at 9:50 of the third.

With just 2:04 remaining in regulation, the Admirals took the lead for good on Ashton’s 19th goal of the season. While standing on the left side of the Penguins net, Ashton chipped a loose rebound off of Killeen’s stick and in behind the Penguins netminder to put the Admirals ahead 3-2, at 17:56 of the third.

Despite facing a six-on-five Penguins’ attack for the final sixty seconds, the Admirals held on for their ninth victory in a row and their fifth victory in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

Dustin Tokarski (25-11-0) made 28 saves on 30 shots in the victory. Patrick Killeen (0-2-0) turned aside 21 of 24 shots in the loss.

The Admirals were 2 for 7 on the power play while the Penguins were 1 for 6. .

Admirals Beat Penguins 4-0, Move Into Tie For First Place

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Penn. – Dustin Tokarski stopped 24 shots to lead the Norfolk Admirals (31-18-1-2) to their fourth consecutive win, a 4-0 shutout victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (29-15-2-5) on Wednesday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

With 65 standings points apiece, Norfolk is now tied with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for first place in the American Hockey League’s East Division. The Admirals return to Scope to face off against the Syracuse Crunch on Friday and Saturday nights.

Norfolk received goals from Trevor Smith, Ondrej Palat, Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Tyler Johnson in the victory. The Admirals out-shot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, 33-24, with Tokarski stopping all eight shots he faced in each period. Norfolk improved to 4-0-0-0 against the Penguins at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza this season with the final contest in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton slated for February 26.

After a scoreless opening period, the Admirals used a shorthanded goal just 59 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Radko Gudas intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and chipped the puck through the Penguins’ logo. Smith picked up the puck as he crossed the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton blue line and sped past two defenders in the right wing. He sent a forehand shot from the low slot that went into the net between the blocker and right leg of Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen for his 20th goal of the season.

Norfolk went ahead, 2-0, with a goal late in the second period. Jean-Philippe Cote stole the puck from a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman in the left corner and chipped it to Johnson for a shot. The rebound came through a maze of bodies in the low slot, where Palat found it and shot it past Thiessen for his fourth goal of the season at 17:51.

Labrie’s 11th goal of the season midway through the final frame extended Norfolk’s lead to 3-0. Labrie emerged from a puck battle in the left corner and snapped a backhand shot from the bottom of the left circle that went between the legs of Munroe and into the net at 12:57.

The Admirals closed out scoring less than two minutes later on a five-on-three power play. Johnson attempted a pass from the bottom of the left circle that was blocked. However, the puck came back to him, and he flipped a backhand shot past Munroe at 14:38 for his 17th goal of the season.

Dustin Tokarski (22-11-0) stopped all 24 shots he faced for the win. Scott Munroe (9-4-3) stopped 29 of 33 shots for the loss.
