Admirals Come Up Short In the Shoot Out, Fall to Senators 3-2

By Ken Peacock

Mike Vernace scored twice in the second period to tie the game, but that is where the offense ended as the Admirals lost to the Binghamton Senators in a Shoot out.

The first period was all Binghamton as former Admiral and current Senator Captain Mark Parrish scored on a partial break away. The Sen’s would score once again with less than 5 minutes left in the first when Josh Godfrey sent a long pass from the Norfolk Zone to Andre Petersson who then sent the puck past Admirals goalie, Jaroslav Janus for a 2-0 lead going into the locker room. Binghamton lead after one period. Norfolk appeared to have little interest in putting shots on the Senator net and were out-shot by the Senators 16-5. Both teams were still wound up from the previous night and the first period saw Admiral and Senator players squaring off to get their frustrations out. The Senators Lessard who was surely asking for a dance the game before was scratched, but Tim Conboy stepped up to play agitator. Pierre-Cedric Labrie, Mark Barberio, and even Carter Ashton got their names on the dance card. Ashton and Conboy got into a scrum. It was broke up once, but Tim Conboy decided to go for extra credit and knocked Ashton to the ground while the linesman was holding Ashton.

Things seemed to settle down in the second period after the penalty filled first period. The action went back and forth for most of the period until The Admirals Mike Vernace scored twice on Robin Lehner within two minutes to tie the game. These were the first two goals of the Season for Vernace. The Admirals finished the period out shooting the Senators 17-15.

The third period had the Admirals racking up 15 shots to the Senators 5. Both teams were scoreless in the third and scoreless at the end of overtime. The bottom fell out the Admirals game in the shootout as none of the Norfolk players were able to score on Lehner. The Senators Hoffman and Peterson both scored on Janus to seal a Senator Victory on the night.

A few observations from my seat. Jaroslav Janus played a pretty good game. Made a few key saves to keep the Admirals in the game. JJ is looking good this season. What has happened to Radko Gudas? He was on the ice and the only time I even noticed him was when he let the Senators get the best of him. Not a good night for Radko tonight. Let’s hope that this type of night does not continue to be a problem for him. How about the attendance for last night? There was an announced crowd of 3812, but I would even question that.

Tonight the Admirals are starting a 7 game road trip in Charlotte against the Checkers. Scope will be sitting empty until November 9 when the WB/S Penguins make their first visit to Norfolk for the 2011/2012 season. That gives you plenty of time to get a good seat and support the Admirals.

I'm not the average hockey nut. It took a bit to grow, but when it did it was like a drug flowing in my veins. I am a season ticket holder of the Norfolk Admirals, longtime supporter of the Washington Capitals, and part time supporter of the Anaheim Ducks (It's hard, but it can be done). My blog is a result of the lack of good sources of Admirals information and happenings. Our paper provides very weak coverage and there is only so much the Admirals themselves can do. There are not to many blogs that cover the Admirals, and when they do it is just rehashed information from the club, the AHL. Nine times out of ten the blogger doesn't even live in the area or go to the games. So what do I want to do? Hmm...good question. I would use this as an outlet for getting out information about the Admirals. Not necessarily the information provided by official channels, but news and information from a fans point of view. Hopefully this is something I can accomplish. I am open to criticism, comments, contributions of infomation for the site. Thank You and Welcome......
