IceCaps Shutdown Admirals 3-1

By Ken Peacock

The Mile One Centre was not as friendly to the Admirals as it was Friday night. While Norfolk (10-7-0-1) out-shot the IceCaps (12-3-3-0) 36-25, it was IceCap goalie, Peter Mannino, standing on his head stopping 35 of the 36 Admiral shots. The Admirals leave Canada with a 1-1 record against the IceCaps and return home for a six-game homestand. Charlotte comes into town for a Thanksgiving Eve showdown starting at 7:15pm.

St. John’s jumped to an early 1-0 lead on a Riley Holzapfel power play goal. Holzapfel took a Carl Klingberg pass in the left circle and put the puck past the blocker of Dustin Tokarski. The IceCaps would increase their lead at the 18 minute mark of the first period. The Admirals turned over the puck when Spencer Machacek intercepted a pass and put the puck past Tokarski for a 2-0 IceCap lead.

Norfolk answered back with their lone goal of the game 27 seconds into the second period. Cory Conacher stole the puck from an IceCap defender and shot the puck over Mannino’s shoulder and into the net. The IceCaps held a 2-1 lead at the end of two.

St. John’s took a 3-1 lead two minutes into the third period. Garth Murray and Kevin Clark entered the Admirals zone and Murray passed to Clark in the slot. Clark then returned the puck to Murray in the bottom of the left circle who shot the puck in the net to give the IceCaps the 3-1 lead. That would be all the goals that St. John’s would need on the night as the IceCaps defense shut down the Admirals for the rest of the night.

Dustin Tokarski (5-5-0) stopped 22 of 25 shots for the loss, and Peter Mannino (4-2-0) stopped 35 of 36 shots for the win. Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play, St. John’s was 1-5.

I'm not the average hockey nut. It took a bit to grow, but when it did it was like a drug flowing in my veins. I am a season ticket holder of the Norfolk Admirals, longtime supporter of the Washington Capitals, and part time supporter of the Anaheim Ducks (It's hard, but it can be done). My blog is a result of the lack of good sources of Admirals information and happenings. Our paper provides very weak coverage and there is only so much the Admirals themselves can do. There are not to many blogs that cover the Admirals, and when they do it is just rehashed information from the club, the AHL. Nine times out of ten the blogger doesn't even live in the area or go to the games. So what do I want to do? Hmm...good question. I would use this as an outlet for getting out information about the Admirals. Not necessarily the information provided by official channels, but news and information from a fans point of view. Hopefully this is something I can accomplish. I am open to criticism, comments, contributions of infomation for the site. Thank You and Welcome......
