Frustrated Admirals Fall To Checkers 6-3

By Ken Peacock

The Charlotte Checkers (11-6-1-1) came into Scope and scored six goals in the final two periods to sink the Admirals (10-8-0-1) by a score of 6-3. Next up for the Admirals are the Providence Bruins on Friday and Saturday nights at Scope.

The Admirals scored first at 16:06 in the first period on a Mike Angelidis goal. J.T. Wyman collected the puck in the offensive zone and skated behind the Charlotte net. Wyman passed to Angelidis who put the puck past Charlotte goalie, Justin Peters, for his fourth goal of the season. Norfolk took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the end of the first.

Early in the second period, Jerome Samson redirected a Chris Terry shot past Admirals goalie, Jaroslav Janus, to tie the game 1-1. Norfolk struck back 33 seconds later on Trevor Smith goal for a 2-1 Admirals lead. The Checkers would answer back with two more before the end of the period to take a 3-2 lead. Mathieu Roy scored shorthanded and Riley Nash put the Checkers ahead by one when he scored off the far post on a 2-on-1 with Justin Soryal.

Norfolk tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period with Cory Conacher’s tenth goal of the season. Conacher one-timed a Mike Angelidis pass into the Checker net at 4:28 of the third. Norfolk seemed to have a meltdown as the Checkers stormed back to score three straight with a shorthanded goal from Samson, a breakaway goal from Jon Matsumoto, and a power-play goal from Zac Dalpe. With the win the Checkers have tied the GEICO Challenge Cup series at two game each.

Jaroslav Janus (5-3-1) stopped 20 of 26 shots for the loss. Justin Peters (5-2-1) stopped 34 of 37 shots for the win. Norfolk was 0-1 on the power play. Charlotte was 3-6.

The Admirals finish out the week with a Friday and Saturday night match up against the Providence Bruins.

I'm not the average hockey nut. It took a bit to grow, but when it did it was like a drug flowing in my veins. I am a season ticket holder of the Norfolk Admirals, longtime supporter of the Washington Capitals, and part time supporter of the Anaheim Ducks (It's hard, but it can be done). My blog is a result of the lack of good sources of Admirals information and happenings. Our paper provides very weak coverage and there is only so much the Admirals themselves can do. There are not to many blogs that cover the Admirals, and when they do it is just rehashed information from the club, the AHL. Nine times out of ten the blogger doesn't even live in the area or go to the games. So what do I want to do? Hmm...good question. I would use this as an outlet for getting out information about the Admirals. Not necessarily the information provided by official channels, but news and information from a fans point of view. Hopefully this is something I can accomplish. I am open to criticism, comments, contributions of infomation for the site. Thank You and Welcome......
