Two Tyler Johnson goals lift the Norfolk Admirals (14-9-0-1) over the Adirondack Phantoms (13-8-0-1), 2-1, on Saturday night at Scope. The six game home stand is now over and the Admirals now leave on a three game road trip beginning with back-to-back games against the Binghamton Senators on Friday and Saturday, and a Sunday match against the Hershey Bears.
Both teams went scoreless in the first period and the Phantoms wee the first to strike in the second period. The Phantoms, Jason Akeson scored his seventh of the season on a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle over Dustin Tokarski’s shoulder. This was a power play goal came at 5:01. The Admirals remained scoreless going into the locker room.
Norfolk would tie the game at 1-1 with just over seven minutes remaining when Tyler Johnson got his first of the night. Johnson received a pass from Jeff Dimmen in the right faceoff circle. Johnson carried the puck and then shot at the net. The puck hit a Phantom defender on the back of his leg and into the net for the Admirals goal at the 12:46 mark of the third period. It looked like the game would go to overtime, but with thirty seconds remaining in regulation Johnson scooped up a rebound and shot it past Phantom goalie, Michael Leighton. Johnson’s game winner was his eighth goal of his rookie season.
After the buzzer tempers flared on the ice. All members of both teams grabbed a partner at the visitors exit. Even goalie, Dustin Tokarski got in a few shots. Eventually both teams made their way out to their respective dressing rooms.
Dustin Tokarski (9-5-0) turned aside 15 of 16 shots for his fourth consecutive victory. Michael Leighton (10-6-0) stopped 32 of 34 shots in the defeat. Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Adirondack was 1-7 with the man advantage.
Next up for the Admirals are Mike McKenna and the Binghamton Senators on Friday and Saturday Night.
