Admirals Split Weekend Series With The Bears

By Ken Peacock

What a weekend! The Norfolk Admirals (26-16-1-2) welcomed the Hershey Bears (25-12-4-3) to Scope for weekend series. With the NHL on their all star break the Admirals received some much needed reinforcements from Tampa Bay. MIke Angelidis, Pierre-Cedric Labrie, Trevor Smith, and Evan Oberg were returned just in time. Friday night the Admirals gave away an Olie Kolzig bobble head and for good measure they had the former Admiral on hand for the game. Saturday night the Admirals once again packed the house and sold out the arena for the first time since January of 2007.

Friday nights game was a defensive minded game. Carter Ashton got the scoring started midway thru the second period. Richard Panik fired a shot on net that was initially stopped by Holtby. Mike Kostka took the rebound and passed to Ashton who fired the puck past Holtby for his 17th goal of the season. Jacob Micflikier would tie the game at one each six minutes into the third. Four minutes later Cory Conacher would send a pass to Trevor Smith. Smith deflected the pass onto the pads of Holbty. Pierre-Cedric Labrie was in the right position and slipped the rebound past Holbty to give the Admirals a 2-1 win. Dustin Tokarski (18-9-0) stopped 29 of 30 shots for his 18th win of the season. Braden Holtby (14-11-1) stopped 44 of 46. Norfolk was 0 for 9 on the power play and Hershey was 0 for 6.

Saturday night the Admirals played to 8,699 fans, selling out the arena for the second time in their AHL history. This was another close game gave us a good look at what the playoffs might bring us. Hershey started the scoring on a power play goal by Ryan Potulny four minuted into the first period. Less than five minutes later Tyler Johnson would score on the power play. Tyler Johnson would score on a one-timer past Braden Holtby. Cory Conacher and Richard Panik received the assists. The Bears would reclaim a 2-1 lead late in the second with another Ryan Potulny shot that beat Admirals netminder, Dustin Tokarski. The Bear lead would not last long as Tyler Johnson and Cory Conacher combined for Conacher’s  AHL-leading 25th goal at 18:59 of the second period. The third period was all Hershey as Matthew Ford intercepted a pass in the Admirals zone. Ford sent a slap shot that deflected off Christian Hanson and past Tokarski to give the Bears the 3-2 lead, Braden Holtby was stellar for the remainder of the period stopping all 17 shots he faced in the final Stanza. Hershey took home the 3-2 win and remain two points ahead of Norfolk in the Standings. Dustin Tokarski (18-10-0) stopped 19 of 22 shots, and Braden Holtby (15-11-1) stopped 38 of 40 shots for the win. Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play, Hershey was 2-5.

The Admirals now break for All-Star weekend. They return to action on the road against Adirondack next Friday and then Springfield next Saturday and Sunday. Norfolk will return to Scope on Friday and Saturday, February 10 and 11 for a series against former Admiral, Michael Leighton and the Adirondack Phantoms.

I'm not the average hockey nut. It took a bit to grow, but when it did it was like a drug flowing in my veins. I am a season ticket holder of the Norfolk Admirals, longtime supporter of the Washington Capitals, and part time supporter of the Anaheim Ducks (It's hard, but it can be done). My blog is a result of the lack of good sources of Admirals information and happenings. Our paper provides very weak coverage and there is only so much the Admirals themselves can do. There are not to many blogs that cover the Admirals, and when they do it is just rehashed information from the club, the AHL. Nine times out of ten the blogger doesn't even live in the area or go to the games. So what do I want to do? Hmm...good question. I would use this as an outlet for getting out information about the Admirals. Not necessarily the information provided by official channels, but news and information from a fans point of view. Hopefully this is something I can accomplish. I am open to criticism, comments, contributions of infomation for the site. Thank You and Welcome......
