Lucky #13: 13 In A Row As Norfolk Beats The Phantoms 3-1

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – Tyler Johnson scored twice in a three-goal first period for the Norfolk Admirals (40-18-1-2) as they defeated the Adirondack Phantoms (28-28-2-1), 3-1, on Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Norfolk has now won 13 straight games and is the first AHL team to 40 wins in 2011-12. The Admirals play the second game of their three-game road trip tomorrow night against the Connecticut Whale.

Goaltender Jaroslav Janus stopped 23 of 24 shots for his fifth consecutive victory. Alexandre Picard also scored for Norfolk while Richard Panik recorded two assists.

Norfolk charged out to a 3-0 lead after one period. Johnson opened scoring 8:54 into the game with his first goal of the game. Panik intercepted a pass along the right half wall in the Adirondack zone. He sent a pass to Johnson in the left circle, and Johnson one-timed the puck past the right leg of Phantoms goaltender Jason Bacashihua for his 21st goal of the season.

The Admirals’ lead doubled less than two minutes later on a power play. Ondrej Palat sent a feed from the left circle across the slot. Picard one-timed the puck from the edge of the right faceoff circle into the net for his fifth goal of the season and a 2-0 Norfolk lead at 10:31.

The lead grew to 3-0 with only 30 seconds remaining in the first period with a second Panik-to-Johnson connection. This time, Panik sent a feed from the right corner into the slot. Johnson one-timed the feed into the net for his second goal of the game and 22nd of the season.

The Phantoms cut Norfolk’s lead to 3-1 midway through the second period. Denis Hamel sent a shot from the right point through traffic and past Janus at 13:19 for a power play goal.

Adirondack out-shot Norfolk, 14-5, in the final frame, but was unable to solve Janus as Norfolk held on for the 3-1 victory.

Jaroslav Janus (13-8-2) made 23 saves on 24 shots for his fifth straight win. Jason Bacashihua (8-9-1) stopped 24 of 27 shots for the loss.

I'm not the average hockey nut. It took a bit to grow, but when it did it was like a drug flowing in my veins. I am a season ticket holder of the Norfolk Admirals, longtime supporter of the Washington Capitals, and part time supporter of the Anaheim Ducks (It's hard, but it can be done). My blog is a result of the lack of good sources of Admirals information and happenings. Our paper provides very weak coverage and there is only so much the Admirals themselves can do. There are not to many blogs that cover the Admirals, and when they do it is just rehashed information from the club, the AHL. Nine times out of ten the blogger doesn't even live in the area or go to the games. So what do I want to do? Hmm...good question. I would use this as an outlet for getting out information about the Admirals. Not necessarily the information provided by official channels, but news and information from a fans point of view. Hopefully this is something I can accomplish. I am open to criticism, comments, contributions of infomation for the site. Thank You and Welcome......
