Norfolk Admirals Vs. Hartford Wolf Pack
Happy New Year everybody! Today is the day we have all been waiting for. The Norfolk Admirals kick off the 2013-2014 AHL Season tonight in Hartford. The team hitting the ice this year is nothing like the team that came off the ice last year. As an AHL fan we know this. Turnover is the name of the game in an AHL club. Players move up to the Ducks, they move to other teams in the AHL, they move to other teams in different leagues as well. That is what happens in the minor leagues. So let’s not dwell on the Calder Cup Admirals. Let’s not dwell on the first baby Ducks that were hear last year. Let’s support the team that is on the ice tonight and the team we shall see on the ice at Scope next week. Let’s support our 2013 – 2014 Norfolk Admirals!
So what is there to look at in this years team? If your looking for some familiar faces then we have John Kurtz, Chris Wagner, Devante Smith-Pelly, Mat Clark, Ryan Parant, and goalie Frederik Anderson. All of these guys spent most of the year with Norfolk last season. Charlie Sarault, Steven Whitney, and goalie John Gibson all made at least one appearance in an Admirals jersey last year. Gibson’s only appearance was on a road game and we never really had a good look at him. The Admirals have also signed a few AHL/NHL veterans in the form of Nolan Yonkman, Garnet Exelby, Alex Grant, and Zack Stortini. The remainder of the team is filled with Duck’s hopefulls Max Sauve, Stefan Noesen, Richard Rakelll, Max Friberg, Brad Staubitz, Joseph Cramarossa, Antoine Laganiere, Kevin Gagne, Stefan Warg, Brett Skinner, Norm Ezekiel, and Mike Little. Igor Bobkov and Teigan Zahn were both assigned to the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL.
So where do you listen or watch the game tonight? Good question, because a few things have changed from last season. The 25th season of Admirals hockey kicks off tonight in Hartford with a 7:05 p.m. start time. If you want to listen then pull up the game live at AM 1490 The Game, or from the listen live links online at www.norfolkadmirals.com and the AM 1490 website at http://www.1021thegame.com.
The Admirals home opener will take place on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. against the Binghamton Senators. Get there early and join the Admirals organization for a Party on the Plaza beginning at 5:00 p.m. There will be live music by Brent Shepard, bounce houses & games for the kids, as well as food and beverages! The first 5,000 fans to walk through the gates will receive the customary 2013-2014 Admirals Magnet Schedule! Following the game, Sara Lee will be giving away 3,000 loaves of bread to fans as the exit the arena! Maybe they can get Smithfield to sponsor the Saturday game and give out some ham so we can make a sandwich.
Speaking of Saturday….. Both teams will meet again on Saturday, October 12 at 7:15 p.m. If you get there early, ah lets say 2:30pm then you can check out the ODU Hockey Team battle American University at Scope. One game ticket will get you in to both games!

So what do we know about Hartford? Nothing much a quick Google search can’t tell you. Here is Paul Doyle’s take on the game tonight from the Hartford Courant :
Revamped Wolf Pack Open Their Season Saturday In Hartford
October 04, 2013|By PAUL DOYLE, The Hartford Courant
HARTFORD — — When last seen by fans in a game that mattered, Hartford’s American Hockey League franchise was skating under a different name with a significantly different roster.
Last season, the Connecticut Whale failed to qualify for the playoffs for just the second time since the franchise moved from Binghamton in 1997. So while the team was being re-branded back to its old colors this summer, the New York Rangers were overhauling the roster.
The result? Welcome back, Hartford Wolf Pack. And say hello to a large group of new faces.
As the Wolf Pack begin their 17th season in Hartford Saturday against Norfolk at 7 p.m., half the players on the roster spent little or no time with the team last season. For the man who has been with the franchise through each of the 16 seasons in Hartford, there is a sense of unknown.

One last thing……. It’s not the name on the back of the jersey……It’s the crest on the front. GO ADMIRALS!
